Missing teeth can affect more than just your smile—they impact your ability to chew comfortably and may lead to shifting of surrounding teeth. Dental bridges offer a time-tested solution for tooth replacement by anchoring prosthetic teeth to your existing natural teeth. At YQR Dental Studio, Dr. Grant Roland brings over 25 years of experience in restorative dentistry, with advanced training through the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies, to help Regina patients restore both function and confidence.
What Are Dental Bridges?
A dental bridge is a fixed prosthetic device that replaces one or more missing teeth by literally “bridging” the gap. The restoration consists of artificial teeth (called pontics) held in place by dental crowns cemented onto the natural teeth adjacent to the space. Unlike removable dentures, bridges are permanent fixtures that become part of your natural dental structure.
Types of Dental Bridges
Traditional bridges are the most common type, using crowns on either side of the gap to support the replacement teeth. This restoration helps restore your smile, improve chewing and speaking abilities, and prevent surrounding teeth from shifting out of position. Designed to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth, traditional bridges offer a durable and reliable solution for replacing missing teeth. During your consultation, we’ll determine whether a traditional dental bridge is the right solution for your specific dental needs and oral health goals.
Caring for Your Dental Bridge
Proper care helps your bridge last many years. Brush twice daily and floss carefully around the bridge using specialized floss threaders, waterflossing, or interdental brushes to clean beneath the pontic. Regular dental checkups allow our team to monitor the bridge and surrounding teeth. Avoid chewing hard foods on the bridge, as it can dislodge and maintain good overall oral hygiene to protect the supporting teeth.
The Bridge Placement Process
The bridge procedure typically involves two appointments. During the first visit, the supporting teeth are prepared by carefully reshaping them to accommodate crowns. Digital scans are then taken to create a custom bridge that matches your natural tooth color and bite. A temporary bridge protects the prepared teeth while your permanent restoration is fabricated. At the second appointment, the temporary bridge is removed, and your custom bridge is fitted, adjusted, and cemented into place to ensure a comfortable, secure fit.
