When a tooth is damaged, decayed, or weakened, a dental crown can restore both its function and appearance. At YQR Dental Studio, Dr. Grant Roland and our team bring over 25 years of experience in restorative dentistry, combining advanced techniques with personalized care to help you maintain optimal oral health. As a fellow of the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies, Dr. Roland stays current with the latest developments in restorative treatments to provide you with effective solutions tailored to your specific needs.
What Are Dental Crowns?
A dental crown is a custom-made cap that covers a damaged or weakened tooth, restoring its shape, strength, and functionality. Crowns are designed to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth, providing both protection and aesthetic improvement. They’re one of the most versatile restorative treatments available, addressing a wide range of dental concerns while preserving your tooth’s underlying structure.
When You Might Need a Crown
Crowns serve multiple purposes in restorative dentistry. You may benefit from a crown if you have a tooth with extensive decay that can’t be treated with a filling alone, a cracked or fractured tooth that requires reinforcement, or a tooth that has undergone root canal therapy and needs protection. Crowns are also used to anchor dental bridges, cover dental implants, or improve the appearance of severely discolored or misshapen teeth.
Types of Crowns Available
Several crown materials are available, each with specific advantages. Porcelain and ceramic crowns offer excellent aesthetics and are often chosen for front teeth due to their natural appearance. Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns combine strength with reasonable aesthetics. During your consultation, we’ll discuss which option best suits your specific situation.
The Crown Process
Receiving a crown typically involves two appointments. During the first visit, the tooth is prepared and reshaped to accommodate the crown. We will take precise dental scans with our 3 shape Trios for crowns to ensure your crown fits comfortably and functions properly. A temporary crown protects the tooth while your permanent crown is being crafted. At the second appointment, the permanent crown is carefully fitted and adjusted for comfort before being securely placed.
